Matilda Wale, Soprano
BMus(Hons) ARSM DipLCM ISM
British-Australian Soprano Matilda Wale shares her time between Birmingham, West Midlands and her home town of Swindon, Wiltshire.

Matilda graduated from the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire (RBC) in 2023 with a First Class (Honours) Batchelor of Music in Vocal and Operatic Studies. She was a proud recipient of the prestigious RBC Pedagogy & Community Engagement Award having undertaken several voluntary and professional Music Facilitator roles (see Music & More) alongside her studies. She commenced her MMus in 2024, continuing under the tutelage of Louise Crane.

During her studies, Matilda’s principal operatic roles ranged from the desperate and downtrodden to the hilarious and un-hinged! At one end, female child convict ‘Pitty’ transported to Australia in McNeff’s Banished and orphaned fruit-seller Ciboulette in Offenbach's Mesdames de la Halle (2022).
At the other, a penchant for comedy saw Matilda play Diane in Offenbach’s Orphée aux enfers (2026), Miss Wordsworth in Britten’s Albert Herring (2025) and Chocholka in Janáĉek's The Cunning Little Vixen (2023).

Matilda achieved national recital success in her mid teens in various competitions including the Association of English Singers and Speakers' Catherine Lambert Junior Recital Prize. She devised themed recitals of English Song and poetry alongside pianist Patricia Williams, gaining Second Place in 2016 & 2017 before being awarded First Place in 2018 with her recital 'Everlasting Echoes - Greek Myth in Song'. As a result, she enjoyed giving a recital at London Song Festival 2019 with pianist Cameron Richardson-Eames. Her love for performing English Song of the obscure variety saw her win the RBC Edward Brooks English Song Prize 2022.
Other notable performances include a 2018 recital at Powderham Castle alongside pianist Johan Barnoin as a result of becoming the Vocal Winner of
the Two Moors Young Musicians Platform 2017, as well as a local lunchtime Schubertiade at the Swindon Recital Series 2019 at the Wyvern Theatre (Swindon) alongside festival founder and pianist Paul Turner.

Alongside recitals, Matilda enjoys providing concert works and Oratorio for choral societies; feel-good favourites for private events and celebrations; as well as light classics for local choirs such as the Swindon Male Voice Choir.

A career highlight was Matilda's professional debut as Chorus member of the National Gilbert & Sullivan Opera Company at the International G&S Festival 2022 nonetheless! Touring at Buxton Opera House, the Royal Hall Harrogate and Malvern Theatre, she was invited back the following year.
Matilda owes much of her technique, musicianship, stagecraft and ensemble skills to Janice Thompson, Director of the JTPTrust - an educational singing charity in Swindon. From 4 to 18 years old, Matilda attended weekly group singing lessons, with regular performance opportunities in festivals, concerts and large-scale community operas. Additional private lessons in her mid-teens contributed to Matilda's earliest recital successes. It is Janice's teaching and unwavering support that shaped Matilda in her formative years and inspired her to pursue singing at a higher level.

Committed to ongoing development, Matilda has partaken in courses with the Association of Teachers of Singing from a young singer in demonstrations (2011 onwards) to an emerging workshop facilitator in the last 6 years. She is currently a member of the Incorporated Society of Musicians and is due to graduate from RBC in 2026 with a Masters in Music Vocal & Operatic Studies.
